Tenerife (span.Tenerife) – the Vulcano island

Tenerife covers 2,034.38 square kilometres and is the biggest of the Canary Islands, which are part of Spain. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco and is about 1.300 kilometres away from the Spanish mainland or “La Peninsular” as the Canarians call it.

More than 800,000 people live and work on the island. It is the most popular islands for tourists because of its location and volcanic origins, the scenery and the climate. Away from the tourist resorts there are many beautiful, quiet, rural areas. The cities of Laguna and Santa Cruz have places of cultural interest including museums and the spectacular new concert hall, the “Auditorio de Tenerife”.

As well the Spanish speaking local people, tourists from all over the world appreciate this unique island. You will find local craft shops, restaurants and medical services. There are many doctors who speak German, English and other languages as well.

Time: Tenerife is one hour behind Germany.

Flight-time from Germany to Tenerife is about 4 hours, but this depends on the departure airport. You will need an identity card or a passport. Tenerife has been part of the EU since 1986.

Currency: Euro

The capital, Santa Cruz, and the seaside towns of Puerto de la Cruz, Playa de las Americas and Playa de los Christianos are worth a visit. The oldest town on the island is La Orotava in the north. It has many fine examples of the carved wooden balconies which typify Canarian architecture.

The university town of La Laguna was declared a World Cultural and Heritage Site by UNESCO. In Icod de los Vinos there many bodegas where you can sample the local wine and see the island’s oldest “Drago” tree which is said to be a thousand years old. The Casa del Vino in El Sauzal is a must for the wine lover.
